American Women is changing our name to EMILY's List Action. We are an affiliated organization of EMILY's List, which has been doing research about the needs and views of women for more than 20 years.

Our organization is strengthening American democracy by increasing public awareness of the issues impacting women and families. Through extensive research and polling, we work to increase awareness of the needs, values, attitudes, beliefs and behaviors of women with regard to the critical issues facing our nation. Our goal is to create an environment where policy makers are advancing sound solutions that will benefit the lives of women and families.

We work with organizations and leaders who share our goal to amplify women’s voices in the policy discussion. By providing access to our research and working collaboratively, our partners will use research driven and tested messaging to educate, inform and influence state and elected leaders and public policy advocates to drive legislative agendas that improve the lives of women and families.

The voice of American women will shape the debate surrounding issues that matter to women and their families to ensure they are part of the public discourse at the state and federal levels.

Why Now?

Women currently account for 50.8% of the United States population, make 85% of the consumer purchases in our country, account for 58% of online retail dollars and make 85% of the health care decisions. And while women constitute 54% of voters, they continue not only to be underrepresented in board rooms and legislative chambers across the country, but face state and federal legislation that ignores their needs and priorities – and often times, directly harms them.

In the last few years, more than 1,000 provisions were introduced at the state legislative level related to women’s health care, many of which negatively impacted women’s health care choices or access. Many of those worked to limit women’s access to affordable, quality health care.

Today, women are driving our economy forward. New research shows that 40 percent of American households with children under 18 include a mother who is either the sole or primary earner for their families, yet women in the United States earn 77% of what men earn. Wage discrimination limits women’s choices and hurts families. More women than ever before are earning college degrees but then cannot find affordable child care options, forcing them to choose between earning a living and raising a family.

Women’s voices must be heard so that policymakers and employers can create new and innovative solutions to meet the challenges of American families. American Women will work to amplify those voices through our opinion research and public outreach. Our research will utilize innovative tools that use both quantitative and qualitative research methods, allowing us to follow women’s thought patterns on their own terms and in their own voices.
