American Women Launches New Resources on the Power of Women Voters

Information sheets display the facts and figures around the impact of women voters in the 2016 election

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today American Women, an organization dedicated to amplifying the voices of women across the nation, unveiled "Women Decide 2016,” a new data resource confirming that women voters have the power to decide elections — this year and in the future. These fact sheets prove what we already know — women voters matter: they are a growing majority of the electorate and they vote in higher numbers. They will be a powerful cohort in electing the next U.S. president and other downballot races across the country.

The six profile fact sheets are based on U.S. Census data and state voter files, and provide specific information on more than 71.4 million women who voted in the last presidential election.

Of all the voters in the last presidential election, 9.1 percent were African American women, 5 percent were Latina, 1.8 percent were Asian American women, 28.9 percent identified as unmarried women, and 8.9 percent were women under 35 years of age.

“When we talk about women voters, we should call them what they are: a majority of the people who vote. And it comes as no surprise that women turn out in greater numbers than men. After all, women are working more hours while still caring for their families, all while only taking home 79 cents for every dollar earned by a man,” said Kate Black, executive director of American Women. “But in 2016, women voters have the ultimate power at the ballot box to vote for a candidate who supports policies that will help women and families get a fair shot.”
