American Women Statement on the New Overtime Protection

Washington, D.C. -- Today American Women Executive Director Kate Black issued the following statement on the new U.S. Department of Labor’s overtime protection that will boost the pay of an estimated 4.2 million workers.

“The facts are clear: women and families are struggling to get ahead. The cost of basic necessities like childcare, groceries, education, and housing have been rising year after year while wages have not. Current policies governing our workplaces have failed to keep up with working families, and today’s action to restore overtime is a welcome relief for the millions of women who work more than 40 hours a week, but do not get the monetary compensation that they’ve earned.”

American Women seeks to strengthen American democracy by increasing public awareness of the issues impacting women and families. Through extensive research and polling, American Women increases awareness of the needs, values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of women with regard to the critical issues facing our nation. The goal of American Women is to create an environment where policy makers are advancing sound solutions that will benefit the lives of women and families. The voice of American Women works to shape the debate surrounding issues that matter to women and their families to ensure they are part of the public discourse. American Women is an affiliated organization of EMILY’s List, which has been doing research about the needs and views of women for nearly 20 years.
